DIlla Collection

THE DETROIT PISTONS ARE DROPPING A J. DILLA CAPSULE COLLECTION

On what would have been James “J Dilla” Yancey’s 50th birthday, the Detroit Pistons announced a retail collaboration with Royce 5’9″ that celebrates the legendary producer’s impact in music and culture.

“Those familiar with Dilla’s musical genius understand his impact on hip-hop but there are still so many who aren’t familiar with his legacy,” said Bilal Saeed, VP of Brand & Marketing Strategy. “The Pistons wanted to tell his story in a creative way while also continuing to shed light on the city’s impact on music around the world.”

“Dilla’s enduring legacy is a treasure that must be safeguarded at any expense,” said Royce. “It is a great honor to be responsible for curating his likeness in this exclusive merchandise drop entrusted to me by his estate and the Pistons. This campaign holds major significance not just for myself, but also for the city of Detroit and the hip-hop community as a whole.”

The Pistons have been connected to Dilla’s friend Frank Nitty of Frank & Dank, who introduced the team to Dilla’s estate and his four heirs — his daughters Ja’Mya Yancey and Ty’Monae Whitlow, his brother John “Illa J” Yancey and his mother Maureen “Ma Dukes” Yancey.

“It has honestly been a long time coming,” Ja’Mya Yancey said. “I am just so glad that we were finally able to do something so major through the appropriate channels and highlight my dad in a way that was fun and exciting while respecting his estate at the same time.”

Each piece in the capsule will pay homage to J. Dilla, his work and his non-traditional style. Product images and details will be unveiled leading up to 313 Day when the capsule drops and the Pistons host the Toronto Raptors at Little Caesars Arena.

If you’re a fan of Dilla — and if you are reading this post, we’re certain that you are — be on the lookout for the capsule collection to be released on March 13 via the Pistons 313 Shop.

BIG DADDY KANE TOLD NAS THAT ILLMATIC WAS A REAL 5 MIC ALBUM

The term “classic” gets thrown around a little too much these days. But when it comes to albums that most people would consider an undeniable classic, Nas’ Illmatic certainly fits the bill. It’s been nearly 30 years since the 10-track album was unleashed to the masses and plenty of people still call it one of the greatest Hip Hop albums ever made.

And you can count Big Daddy Kane as one of the people that believes this.

Kane recently appeared on the Idea Generation to discuss a number of topics and he recalled a time when he met Nas at Unique Studios in 1994, shortly after Illmatic dropped. Nas proved himself to be humble in the presence of the legendary Kane and engaged in a conversation where he looked to get some advice from the “Ain’t No Half Steppin” rapper. But all Kane wanted to do was tell the young Queensbridge emcee that his album was absolutely perfect.

“I’m telling him how phenomenal his album is, and he keeps asking me what he should have done different,” Kane said. “People exaggerate with these 5 mic album [ratings], but your shit is a true 5 mic album.”

For the young ones reading this, the 5-mic rating was The Source’s measuring stick for albums. Back in the 90s it was The Source that guided Hip Hop heads on whether an album was dope or garbage. Nas was one of 15 albums to earn the distinction and Kane wanted Nasir Jones to know how significant his contribution was.

But Nas pressed and Kane did give him the advice he wanted.

“If it was me, I would have had one song on there for the ladies because they buy records too,” he said. “That’s me, you did what you do, it was perfect. You don’t need to do what I do, Kane said before adding that one needs to be careful sharing that sort of information as not to change the direction of an aspiring artist.”

Did Nas need a song for the ladies?

Probably not.
